A US-based private equity fund has bought Brazilian assets from Chilean furniture manufacturer Masisa, at the conclusion of a private bidding process.
Foley Hoag LLP in the US and Machado, Meyer, Sendacz e Opice Advogados in Brazil advised US-based Global Forest Partners in its purchase of property from manufacturer Masisa, represented in Brazil by Hapner & Kroetz Advogados.
Under the deal, which closed on 22 January, Global Forest Partners will pay US$71 million to acquire a saw mill and forest land spanning 13,000 hectares in Rio Negrinho, in the state of Santa Catarina.
Masisa initiated the private bidding process for the property in late 2008. "The real challenge of this transaction was reconciling the terms of the bidding process with the subsequent agreements between the parties," says Rodrigo Cavali of Hapner & Kroetz.
